Part of the reason for my long absence from the blogosphere is that I was fortunate enough to get a teaching position that kept me out of the house from early morning until almost six each evening. I will admit that it was a bit of a culture shock after all, I usually work a three hour day twice a week! However, it was a culture shock that I enjoyed immensely. My new job began […]

Well it’s been awhile since the #100happydays challenge came to an end.  I am still very aware of the little things that infuse the most mundane and ordinary of days with happiness. I am more aware than ever before of the importance of reflecting and being grateful for them. Since finishing the challenge I have taken up running, well I have begun the the couch to 5k challenge and am delighted with my progress. I […]

Day 31 warts and all!!! – every morning Darren cleans out the wood burner and lights it so the house is warm and cosy for the day. He leaves the fuel buckets full so I don’t have to lug in turf or coal. Can you feel me smile? I wouldn’t usually post this pic cos one of my tile fell off recently because of the heat generated by the stove! But feck it! It’s not#100perfectdays . […]

Hope you all had a fantastic St Patrick’s weekend.  Busy here chez Shiels although I did post the #100happydays photo to facebook, so still going strong! Day 28 This packet has been hanging about the kitchen all weekend. Each time I catch a glimpse of it I smile and feel happiness envelope me! I remember going out with a good friend and her cousin one night many, many years ago. Myself and her cousin seemed […]

It was a bit chaotic here today.  On Wednesdays and Fridays I teach a women’s group. It can be challenging and there are times when my carefully crafted class plans get thrown out the window and I have to rely on my initiative and resourcefulness. Today was one of those days. After finishing work but before collecting the kids I thought I’d have time to bake cookies and get a ginger cake in the oven […]

Words of Wisdom

I’m a thinker. I’ve always sat and pondered stuff. Sometimes it can be a bad thing. I clearly remember Mammy Byrne telling me on more than one occasion that I think too much. It didn’t stop me. I’ve always loved writing my thoughts down. Before my children came along I used to send their Dad cards regularly. In these cards I would write my thoughts, my hopes, my dreams, my fears. When my babies arrived […]

The End of an Era

It’s here. Much quicker than I expected. It’s the Sunday before the kids return to school. Christmas is well and truly over except for the horrible part, packing up the sparkly lights and the decorations and ironing the school uniforms that have been hiding at the very bottom of the massive pile of ironing. You all know I’m not one for wishing away the holidays from the moment the kids arrive home on the 22nd […]

During the week I had to take my eleven year old daughter to see a dermatologist. She has  been left with a mark on her leg after receiving her routine vaccinations as a toddler and as the mark had changed colour and doubled in size our family doctor recommended that we get it checked out. I’m not going to lie and say I never gave it a thought until the day  her appointment arrived because […]

Has the arrival of Facebook, Twitter and the numerous other social media and networking sites impacted positively on our day to day living? This is something I ask myself regularly. Are we better people as a result of social media or has it just allowed us a wider platform to be the same. I will admit to be being a huge Facebook and Twitter fan. I have a love hate relationship with Facebook. I predominantly […]

Wednesday morning began like every other morning. My alarm went off at twenty to seven and I dragged myself out of bed to walk the dog. I was met at the back door by my lovely ten year old and off we set. Since the beginning of the new school year this has become our morning ritual and I have to admit I’m really enjoying these morning walks. It’s a chance for us to talk […]
